Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a substance naturally produced by mammals, including humans, that plays an important role in immune defence. This acid is produced in white blood cells and fights pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi by penetrating their cell walls and neutralising processes within the cell, rendering them incapacitated. Nevertheless, it remains harmless to the skin and mucous membranes.
