Skin care for dogs

For injuries and skin problems

Dogs naturally love to play, fight, and run – this often results in the animals hurting themselves. Skin wounds are part of everyday life for our animals just as for us humans: grazes on our dogs from boisterous frolicking with other dogs, scrapes from branches and thorns on a walk through thickly wooded areas or cuts from broken glass. Itching, eczema or hotspots can develop into a major problem for our four-legged friends. But torn footpads, dry skin or bedsores can also be very unpleasant

Of course, the body itself takes care of healing the injured skin. However, we can help the animal to get through the healing process better, faster and, above all, without any complications.

Skin infections – when wounds do not heal

Fresh, bleeding wounds are always a big shock for us animal owners at first. If the wound is only superficial, as many grazes are, then our worries are generally unfounded – because these wounds often look worse than they actually are. By contrast, it is often the smallest wounds that have the worst potential, such as with thorn pricks or bites from ticks and fleas: they can get infected, expand to larger areas of skin, and leave behind wounds that resist healing and become chronically persistent. Intensive skin care is then required for the dog. If the dog licks itchy spots too much, a small wound can overnight become a large, puss-filled skin infection known as a “pyoderma” or, more commonly, as a “hotspot”. This often affects dogs with thick furs and undercoats in which the skin does not dry easily and is unable to breathe. Careful skin care is particularly important for them.

To prevent skin infections in dogs, all wounds – big or small – should be disinfected and cared for without delay.

Our tip:

Injuries – big and small – and skin infections are often difficult to see under the dog's fur. So it is important to check your dog’s fur regularly. You can recognise the start of an infection by redness, swelling or exuding wounds.

If in doubt, consult a veterinarian to exclude the possibility of serious infections and severe injuries.

One thing is sure:

In order to be able to treat your dog's wounds optimally, you should always have the Skin Clean+Care (spray) gel ready to hand in your pet pharmacy to clean them as part of the initial treatment of the injury. The gel is available in two variants, each with a different applicator. Depending on the character and sensitivity of the dog, either the dropper or the spray version is recommended.

After the initial treatment of the wound, a good wound ointment for dogs or a special ointment - such as our SkinCare Wound & Healing Balm - can support wound healing and skin regeneration.
